Transvaginal Mesh – Pelvic Mesh (800) 932-0979
Transvaginal mesh is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP). The Mayo Clinic describes Pelvic Organ prolapse as “When the muscles and ligaments supporting a woman’s pelvic organs weaken, the pelvic organs can slip out of place (prolapse).” POP is treated through a number of ways with the most benign options involving exercise geared toward rebuilding muscle. When surgery is recommended it can include the use of surgical mesh. That is where the transvaginal mesh cases begin. Women across the country used the mesh to repair POP and other conditions such as incontinence. Unfortunately, the mesh has resulted in significant health issues for these women.
The FDA in a July 2011 report issued findings that concluded that there are significant concerns with the use of mesh.
The FDA reports that after evaluating of adverse event reports and assessment of the scientific literature that using transvaginally placed mesh in POP repair does not improve clinical outcomes any more than traditional POP repair that does not use mesh while posing greater risks to patients.
In particular, pelvic mesh products have resulted in serious complications such as vaginal mesh erosion which can require multiple surgeries to repair and on going pain.
