Maryland homeowners should be aware of the Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit program which limits the amount of property taxes any homeowner must pay based upon his or her income. This may put a little more money in your pocket if you meet the requirements.
Some of the Requirements
There are several requirements that each applicant must meet.
- The dwelling must be principal residence where you live at least six months of the year, including July 1, unless you are a recent home purchaser or unless you are unable to do so because of your health or need of special care.
- Your total assets including retirement accounts cannot exceed $200,000.
- Finally your combined gross household income cannot exceed $60,000.
Application
Homeowners must apply every year by no later than September 1.
Applications should be mailed to:
State Department of Assessments & Taxation
Homeowners’ Tax Credit Program
301 W. Preston Street, Room 900
Baltimore, Md. 21201-2395
The Tax Credits Telephone Service can be reached at 410-767-4433 or 1-800-944-7403 (toll free in Maryland outside the Baltimore metro area).
This is a general overview and is not meant as a comprehensive discussion. For this reason and others, it is always a good idea to speak with a knowledgeable Maryland bankruptcy lawyer to get answers specific to your situation.
